Watches stopped being necessary long ago.

The world we live in today, everything tells the time more accurately; phones, computers, cars, microwaves…the list goes on. On the contrary, we now have smart watches that are more capable than an analog could ever be.

What makes watches still have an appeal?

Is it the status? The heritage? The identity which we tie our timepieces to? Is it our last grasp at a world that has passed?

I believe it’s all of the above. The craftsmanship of an analog is non comparable to that of the smart watch. Hundreds of moving pieces in a capsule no larger than a quarter, just to be able to tell the time.

Then tool watches, dress watches, everyday watches and divers all came into play to almost determine the identity of the wearer.

This whole idea of “capability” and our obsession with it. We love things that are capable. I will most likely never dive 300 meters into the ocean, but if I do, I know my watch will function. Watches in war, movies (worn by action heroes), space, expeditions, etc are all marketing schemes selling us on the capability of these timepieces.

These timepieces are something that, without modern technology, will outlive us. They tell stories of our life through the scratches, dings, and blemishes that show, not only the capability, but its use and meaning to the owner.
